Implementing a Solution

There are generally two parts to implementing a data management solution:

Part 1:

A clear understanding must be gained of how the data system relates to business objectives. It is important to have a detailed understanding of the data to effectively quantify its value to the business. One method is to use a simple rule of thumb; the older the data gets the less valuable it is. Alternatively, it is possible to calculate the cost to achieve the resulting data for a particular task or project. Often the most valuable data contains a human “value add” element combined with the source component. Typically these would include interpretations, analysis, seismic surveys etc. It is important to outline the most efficient process (or data flow) for the organization. Responsibility for defining the most efficient "data pipeline" often referred to as the role of a "Data Czar."

Part 2:
Once the most efficient data system has been defined, the various options can be considered of how to actually implement the proposed solution. Typically these options fall into three categories:
  • Human Labor more>>
  • Internal Software Development more>>
  • Purchase Commercial Product more>>
Whenever possible any new system implementation should attempt to incorporate "best practices." These have been compiled from years of practical experience and have proved to avoid costly pitfalls. Click here to find out how organizations mature their approach to data management.
